Grace Lalzarzo Khawbung has made history by becoming the first commercial pilot from the Hmar community, marking a milestone achievement for both her community and Indian aviation.
Originally from Sielmat in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, Grace was also selected for the Paris Air Show 2025, held from June 16 to 22 at Le Bourget, France.
Daughter of R. Tawna Khawbung and Rose Khawbung, Grace first gained recognition when she won the Miss Sikpui Ruoi title at the Manipur state level in 2005. Years later, she charted a pioneering path in aviation, undergoing extensive flight training in South Africa and the United States. She earned her Commercial Pilot License in April 2025, and is currently in the final stages of selection for pilot placements.
Her aviation career began more than 13 years ago at Qatar Airways, where she joined as a cabin crew member. Through dedication and consistent performance, she rose to the position of Cabin Service Director (CSD) — a senior leadership role involving in-flight operations, crew training, and service management.
Grace participated at the 55th edition of the Paris Air Show, where the airline unveiled several key innovations, including:
• The Boeing 777-300ER with a special UEFA Champions League livery
• The debut of the ultra-luxurious Gulfstream G700
• The launch of ‘Qsuite Next Gen’, the airline’s next-generation business class cabin, set to debut on the Boeing 777X and Airbus A350 by late 2025
Her achievements have drawn praise from across India’s Northeast and the global Hmar diaspora, highlighting her as a role model for aspiring aviators and young women in under-represented communities.
