The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) has issued a strong warning to the concerned authorities, urging the immediate suspension of a proposed cycling event planned to pass through Kangpokpi District on December 19, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, reportedly spearheaded by Malem Thongam Meetei under the banner of a “Manipur Peace Route,” is feared to provoke tension in an already sensitive region.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, COTU expressed serious apprehension over the timing and route of the proposed mission, particularly as it coincides with the Christmas festive season observed by the Christian Kuki-Zo community in Kangpokpi District. The committee underscored that the community, known for its peaceful ethos, is in no position to welcome any activity that could escalate communal sensitivities or disturb public harmony.
“The Kuki-Zo people of Kangpokpi are a peace-loving community by nature. However, the present socio-political climate demands utmost caution. Any action that risks inflaming tensions, especially during a sacred festive period, is highly undesirable,” the statement read.
COTU categorically stated that should any untoward incident arise in connection with the proposed cycling mission, the Committee and the Kuki-Zo community of Kangpokpi District would not be held responsible. Instead, the onus of responsibility would rest squarely on the concerned authorities for failing to prevent the event despite clear warnings.
The Committee has appealed to the administration and security agencies to act decisively in the larger interest of peace and stability, and to avert any situation that could further strain communal relations in the district.
