The body of Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte was brought to his residence at Dorcas Veng, Churachandpur district, Manipur, at around 3:15 in the evening on Tuesday.
The body reached Aizawl, Mizoram, on Sunday night. However, on the way to Churachandpur district, the cortege had to stop at different villages along the Mizoram–Churachandpur road, as funeral programmes were organised at various locations along the route.
People gathered along the roads in various localities to bid farewell to the late MLA. Gun salutes were also given at various locations, with the last one at the entrance of his residence.
Following an announcement by the Kuki Students Organisation and the Zomi Students Federation declaring the closure of business establishments, schools, and offices in the district, the streets wore a deserted look, with no movement of vehicles except for emergency services.
Jiribam MLA Ashab Uddin also reached the residence of the late MLA in the evening. Later, the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, also arrived at the residence. According to sources, different MLAs from Manipur, except those from the Meitei community, are also expected to visit the residence of the MLA.
Earlier in the morning, Vumsuan Naulak, Chairman of the apex body of the Zomi community, the Zomi Council, declared that the burial service of the late MLA would not take place today or even on wednesday. He said discussions would be held with the family and apex tribal bodies regarding the date of the burial and the kind of preconditions that must be completed before laying the body to rest.
