Assam Assembly Elections: Record Voter Turnout Marks Historic Polls Amid Isolated Clashes

Assam witnessed a historic surge in voter participation during the 2026 Assembly elections, recording its highest-ever turnout of 85.38%, surpassing the previous peak of 84.67% set in 2016. The single-phase polling, held on April 9 from 7 am to 5 pm, saw enthusiastic participation across the state’s constituencies.

According to the Election Commission of India, over 2.49 crore eligible voters cast their ballots to choose from 722 candidates. This year’s elections marked a significant shift from the 2021 Assembly polls, which were conducted in three phases.

Despite the largely peaceful conduct of voting, sporadic incidents of violence were reported. Around 30 people sustained injuries, and seven individuals were arrested in connection with poll-related clashes. Tensions reportedly escalated at one polling station after Congress candidate Kartik Sena Sinha allegedly damaged an electronic voting machine (EVM), leading to confrontations between Congress and BJP supporters, reports PTI

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the turnout as a “historic moment” for Assam, emphasizing that the election had evolved into a broader movement to protect the state’s identity and culture. He highlighted that voter participation exceeded 95% in several booths, calling it “extraordinary,” and noted that the electorate had risen above divisions of language and caste.

Sarma, contesting from the Jalukbari constituency, cast his vote alongside his family at a polling station in Kampur.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress president and Jorhat candidate Gaurav Gogoi expressed optimism about the outcome, stating that the high turnout reflected a desire for change. “People are voting for a new Assam. On May 4, I am sure we will witness this,” he said.

Vote counting is scheduled for May 4, when the final results will determine the political direction of the state.
