The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has announced picketing of offices in all the "Naga hill districts" under its jurisdiction for 48 hours starting from June 2, 2025 to express its resentment of the ongoing "imposed border fencing and scrapping of Free Movement Regime (FMR)".
In a statement today, the ANSAM said it has been expressing concern and dismay over the "rapid and forceful" ongoing construction of border fencing in "Naga homeland", through public demonstrations, rallies, sit-in protests and repeated press releases and memoranda voicing opposition to it from various Nagas mass based civil organizations. "The indifference attitude and aggressive approach of the Government of India in this regard is highly undemocratic and repressive which is highly condemnable", the ANSAM also said. The Naga student body said it "stands rigidly to oppose the coercive move of the Government of India, come what may".
Time and again, the ANSAM, "representing the voice of Naga students and youth in Manipur", said it had unequivocally asserted that permanent sealing of the border and scrapping of FMR is highly unacceptable and uncalled for, "as it will not solve any problem, rather it has triggered unprecedented human crisis".
It can be recalled that the ANSAM in its presidential council meeting held on May 12, 2025 had unanimously agreed to take up democratic course of actions to register its sentiment and for immediate stoppage of the "imposed" fencing work and reinstatement of FMR. The ANSAM also, while "re-asserting the people’s voice", reminded the Government of India to "sincerely" engage in the negotiating table to resolve the protracted Indo-Naga political issue.
In pursuance of the resolution adopted during the presidential council meeting and in consonance with the decision taken at the office bearers meeting held on May 26, 2025, the ANSAM said it will strictly take up office picketing in all the "Naga hill districts" under its jurisdiction for 48 hours starting from June 2, 2025.
In light of the above, the ANSAM called upon all the constituent units and sub-ordinate bodies to strictly enforce office picketing in their respective jurisdictions for 48 hours starting on June 2, 2025 keeping in mind the movement is in the interest of the people and in defense of "our ancestral land and integrity of Naga families". In the event of any unwanted incident and situation arising out of this issue, the Government of India and the Government of Manipur should solely hold the responsibility, the ANSAM added.
The Naga student body also said it also put on record straight that any individual, contractor, transporter, agency etc. engaging in the transportation, supply, storage, or facilitation of any raw materials intended for the construction of border fencing in connection with the scrapping of FMR should stop immediately. "If any entity is found aiding this activity, they shall be held accountable for any untoward incident and face the consequences", the ANSAM cautioned.
Meanwhile, the United Naga Council (UNC) has announced to endorse the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) in office picketing for 48 hours starting from June 2, 2025, in all the "Naga hill districts" under their jurisdiction.
As such, the UNC has asked "all district apex bodies and tribe hoho presidents to co-operate without fear or favour" in this connection.
