Kuki-Zo People Uphold Humanity, Release Trespasser Safely Amid Buffer Zone Breach

In a remarkable display of humanity, the Kuki-Zo community under the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) ensured the safe release of a Meetei individual who had allegedly crossed into Kuki-Zo territory in violation of the mutually recognized Buffer Zone.

The individual, identified as 50-year-old Yumjao Angom, son of (Late) Tangangjao Angom of Sekmai Makhan Leikai, was found on August 20 at Saparmaina within Kuki-Zo areas in Kangpokpi District. Despite the sensitivity of the situation and prevailing tensions, the Kuki-Zo people, in line with their long-held values of compassion and peaceful coexistence, released him unharmed and arranged for his safe return by handing over to the Gamnom-Saparmeina Police Station.

While underscoring their humanitarian gesture, CoTU, however, strongly condemned the breach, calling it a “serious violation” of the fragile peace being maintained in the region. “This act threatens communal harmony and undermines the purpose of the Buffer Zone,” the tribal body said in a statement.

CoTU further urged Central security forces and state police deployed in the Buffer Zone to exercise greater vigilance and strictly prevent such unauthorized crossings in the future. Warning of tougher measures if such incidents persist, the body cautioned that failure by law enforcement could compel the Kuki-Zo community to reintroduce self-checks and verification of movement, for which the Government would bear full responsibility.

Despite the gravity of the warning, CoTU reiterated its commitment to peace, coexistence, and the safety of all communities. “The Kuki-Zo people have once again demonstrated their humanity in the face of provocation. We will continue to uphold our values, but expect equal responsibility from others to maintain peace,” the communiqué read.
