The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), Kangpokpi, has announced a 48-hour total shutdown across Kangpokpi district from 5 PM on October 29 to 5 PM on October 31, 2026, in protest against the alleged kidnapping of two Kuki youths.

In a press statement, COTU said the two youths were allegedly kidnapped by Naga militants on October 28, 2026, between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village.

The youths were identified as Thangginlun Chongloi, 21, son of Paominlal Chongloi, and Paoginlal Hangsing, 20, son of Haolet Hangsing, both residents of Taphou Kuki village.

As part of the shutdown, all shops, markets, vehicles, schools and offices across Kangpokpi district have been directed to remain closed. Medical services, media personnel and security forces have been exempted from the shutdown.

COTU has demanded the immediate, safe and unconditional release of both youths, urging the government to take urgent action to secure their rescue.

The tribal body also condemned what it described as a serious security lapse and alleged discriminatory treatment by security forces and the state government in responding to incidents involving Kuki-Zo people.

According to COTU, incidents involving non-Kuki-Zo groups often receive prompt responses, including rescue efforts and combing operations, while cases involving the kidnapping, attacks or killing of Kuki-Zo people allegedly face delays or inaction.

COTU termed the disparity in the response unacceptable and said it had emboldened anti-social elements.

The Committee warned that it would intensify its agitation if the two youths were not released safely and unharmed. It further held the government and the alleged perpetrators responsible for any consequences arising from the situation.
