Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has terminated Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam with immediate effect following an inquiry by its Internal Committee into sexual harassment allegations made by 11 female students.
According to the termination order issued on friday, the university dismissed the professor, who was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences with immediate effect.
The order stated that the decision followed an inquiry conducted by the university's Internal Committee into the allegations against the professor.
The order cited UGC reference number F.91-1/2013 (TFGS)/10(1) and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.
Reacting to the order Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam took to social media and stated that ," The reported dismissal of Shri Bimol Akoijam from JNU following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations raises serious concerns about public trust and accountability. I call on him to resign as a Member of Parliament and apologise to the people of Manipur. Women’s safety and dignity must remain above party politics, with due process respected".
