Henglep Assembly Constituency MLA Letzamang Haokip has strongly condemned the killing of a civilian, identified as Lenminsang, in North Songkong village under Henglep Sub-Division, and demanded an immediate judicial inquiry into the incident.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the MLA expressed deep concern over the death of Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip, allegedly at the hands of joint security forces.

“I strongly and unequivocally condemn the shocking killing of Lenminsang at the hands of joint security forces at North Songkong village, Henglep Sub-Division,” Haokip said.

The MLA described the incident as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” stating that the loss of a civilian life at the hands of those entrusted with public safety raises serious concerns and undermines public trust.

Haokip further referred to allegations made by eyewitnesses, who claimed that after the victim was shot, his clothes were removed and his body was taken away by security personnel. According to the statement, witnesses also alleged that attempts were made to portray the incident as a fake encounter.

“If these allegations are found to be true, it would constitute a grave abuse of authority and a serious violation of the rule of law,” the MLA stated, stressing that the claims warrant an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation.

He also expressed concern over the continued failure to return the mortal remains of the deceased to his family, saying the delay had compounded the grief and anguish of the bereaved family and the public.

“Every family has the right to perform the last rites of their loved one with dignity and respect,” he said.

Demanding accountability, Haokip called for the immediate recovery and handover of the mortal remains to the family, a thorough judicial and independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, and strict action against anyone found responsible.

He further urged authorities to investigate any alleged attempts to conceal facts, tamper with evidence, or misrepresent the circumstances of the incident.

The MLA extended his condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed his support for their pursuit of truth and justice.
