Kuki Inpi Temporarily Suspends Total Shutdown Following Talks with Government

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), along with Joint Kuki-Zo Civil Society Organisations, tribal bodies, and student organisations, has announced the temporary suspension of the ongoing total shutdown imposed across Kuki-Zo-inhabited districts following discussions with the Government held on May 29 and 30.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KIM said the decision was taken after consecutive rounds of consultations with the Government yielded “positive outcomes and assurances” regarding issues affecting the Kuki-Zo people.

The organisation stated that the shutdown has been suspended with immediate effect as a gesture of goodwill, cooperation, and commitment to maintaining law and order.

According to KIM, the decision was made in good faith and in the larger public interest to facilitate administrative processes and provide the Government an opportunity to act responsibly in addressing the concerns of the Kuki-Zo community and ensuring justice.

However, KIM clarified that the temporary lifting of the shutdown should not be interpreted as a compromise on the community’s rights, demands, or position. It described the move as a responsible step taken with sincerity and maturity, while expecting corresponding action from the Government.

The apex body further stated that the Kuki-Zo people have exercised considerable restraint, patience, and cooperation despite prolonged hardships and injustices. It expressed hope that the Government would reciprocate the gesture through concrete actions, accountability, and a genuine commitment to resolving the issues raised by the community.

At the same time, KIM issued a stern warning that any delay, negligence, or failure by the Government to take visible and meaningful action during the period of temporary relaxation would compel the Kuki-Zo people to intensify the shutdown and other democratic forms of agitation.

“In such an eventuality, the Government alone shall bear full responsibility for the consequences arising out of its inaction or failure to uphold justice and protect the rights and interests of the people,” the statement said.

KIM also thanked the Kuki-Zo public for their unity, discipline, and unwavering support throughout the shutdown and public movement, asserting that the collective struggle would continue until justice, security, and appropriate safeguards are ensured for the community.
