Zalengbung Village under sustained assault from NSCN Eastern Flank

Zalengbung Village Authority on Monday claimed that their village came under sustained assault from the NSCN Eastern Flank from Friday evening till Saturday morning.

“As part of their series of attacks on Kuki villages from multiple locations by the NSCN-EF, Zalengbung village came under sustained assault from this outfit based in Thawai,” the Zalengbung Village Authority said in a release issued on Saturday.

The village authority stated that the attack continued from 5:45 PM on April 24, 2026, till 7:00 AM on April 25, 2026, undeterred by the presence of security forces in the area.

The village authority alleged that security forces deployed in the region appear to lack adequate authority from the state government to intervene effectively.

“As the protection of our village and our people is our fundamental responsibility, we were compelled to retaliate in self-defense,” the release stated.

In light of the impunity with which Tangkhul militants launched a full-scale attack on Mulam and Shongphel villages, and subsequently escalated their aggression to other villages such as Zalengbung, Shangkai, and Mongkot Chepu, it is evident that the government has failed in its duty to ensure the safety and security of the Kuki population in Ukhrul, the village authority added.

The village authority also expressed its full support for the demand put forward by the Working Committee of Kuki CSOs, Ukhrul, for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul district with Kangpokpi district.
